Commander of the Israeli Delegation to the Philippines: “An amazing mission with tremendous personal satisfaction” While the residents of the Philippines islands collected the pieces after the devastating Typhoon that struck them and left hundreds of thousands homeless, an officer from the Israeli Home Front Command sent help to those working with the local community. He wrote, “It was a difficult day and a lot of work, but the smiles of the students make it worth it.” Nov 19, 2013, 12:45PM | Rachel Avraham Captain Assaf Diller in the Philippines Photo Credit: IDF Spokespersons Office Captain Assaf Diller, a company commander of the Israeli Home Front Command, reported from the field and described the Israeli delegations to the Philippines work with survivors of Typhoon Haiyan. On Sunday, most of the Israeli team was in a school in Bogo City Center that was damaged. The school has 1,200 students from kindergarten to sixth grade. The principal has 20 classrooms. Most of the school was destroyed in the storm and the Israeli team started to rebuild it. The Israeli mission reported that this was amazing in itself, yet what was more exciting was to give the children the right to start first grade on the first day of the school year. The Israeli mission worked on the premise that having the students in school will cause the parents to return to work, which would help the ruined city to restart its stagnant economy. The Israeli team on Sunday morning was in the four usable classrooms, raising and reinforcing the walls. Overall, seven classrooms are now able to be used and 350 students in the Philippines were able to return to school, thanks to the work of the Israeli mission to the Philippines. The Israeli mission was working within the hospital walls with high motivation as well. It is known that the Philippines needs’ Israeli staff in their hospitals. The Israeli delegation took a number of medical jobs and was sought after. Damage from Typhoon Haiyan Photo Credit: Reuters On Monday, the Israeli team returned to the school in Bogo City Center. They saw that the students there returned to their studies. During their first three hours, they walked around the classroom and saw the students. They noted that it was good to see that the work of the past day paid off. The Israeli delegation taught the students words and songs in Hebrew. The Filipino students were very excited. The Filipino teachers explained to the students that the members of the Israeli delegation were officers in the Israel Defense Forces who came to the Philippines to help their country and their children in particular. The last project at the school was the conference hall. The ceiling of the hall had completely collapsed and needed to be removed so that the hall could be used. The head of the educational institution came to say thank you and seemed very excited. This was the second day that the Israeli team worked outside of the hospital. They stressed that the situation is bad, that the people are hungry and mostly don’t know how to help themselves. On the way back to the hospital, the members of the Israeli delegation spoke among themselves. According to Assaf Diller, “: “We agreed that it was a difficult day and there is a lot of work, but the smiles of the students and our personal satisfaction made it worth it.”
