Basels drei scheenschte Dääg (three most wonderful days) are getting closer--the Fasnacht that lasts from 4 am Monday morning to 4 am Thursday morning. The city is slowly getting ready for this events, and you may have noticed some of these preparations. For example, construction sites on some city streets (eg, near the Kunstmuseum) are being finished and dismantled so as not to interfere with the parades (Corteges) on Monday and Wednesday. Potential obstacles, such as trash cans or sometimes even benches, are removed along the parade routes and in other places to allow the large floats to pass through during the parades and minimize the risk of tripping to spectators and participants during the Morgenstreich. And you will see notices of changed bus and tram routes and schedules for the festivities in the public transport vehicles. Other preparations are done behind the scenes--for example, when the public works department gets all their street cleaners ready to remove tons and tons of confetti on each of the days to allow trams and busses to run through town at least part of the days--a truly remarkable feat once you realize just how much confetti is being dumped on the streets (and spectators)!
