“Basketball and Hockey give way to Baseball and Football,” Sports Talk, By Jamie Heap for the Thursday, July 4, 2013 AMHERST DAILY NEWS The future looks bright for the NHL as it welcomes a new generation of players such as Nathan MacKinnon, Jonathan Drouin, Seth Jones and Max Domi into the league. However, with the 2013 NBA and NHL finals in the books, fans of team sports will need to turn to MLB and the CFL to quench their summer sports’ fix. The CFL welcomes Ottawa back into the fold. Their team is called the RedBlacks. Speaking of the CFL, the Cumberland Wolfpack minor football team was able to meet such professional CFL players as Nick Burns, Andre Durie, Chris Van Zeyl and James Yurichuk this past May during the Super Elite CFL camp in Amherst. Last year, the Cumberland Wolfpack bantams won the city football championship in Moncton, notwithstanding the 2012 New Brunswick Fair Play sport award. “The goal of the Cumberland Wolfpack is to help mature young people become responsible citizens, treating people with fairness and respect through the game of football,” stated Cumberland Wolfpack president Craig Desjardins this past April. The Toronto Blue Jays historic winning streak captured the attention of baseball fans across Canada. Finally, the Jays are living up to the expectations put on them. Speaking of the Jays, late radio announcer Tom Cheek, Rob Ducey and George Bell join former Montreal Expos great Tim Raines and Vancouver AAA Mounties owner Nat Bailey in the 2013 class of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary’s, Ontario. Ironically, Bell and Raines were teammates with the Chicago White Sox in 1993 when the Jays defeated them 4 games to 2 in the American League Championship Series en route to winning back-to-back World Series titles. Cheek will be honoured by the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York this July. Will Tim Raines be joining him in 2014? Only time will tell. Closer to home, the Amherst Little League Selects travelled to Boston at the end of June while the Amherst Bantam Red Sox and Midget Athletics’ seasons are in full swing, as is the Amherst Men’s Slopitch League schedule that wraps up on July 9. Who will represent the Toronto Blue Jays on July 16 and 17 at Citi Field, New York, home of the Mets, in the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game? Stay tuned!
