Bayaan on the road On Friday the 24th of October Bayaan Collective and Asian University for Women organized a symposium on social movements. Speakers consisted of North South University Faculty Moushumi Shabnam,Tauhid Bin Kashem and Bayaan Collective convenors Parsa Sanjana Sajid and Saad Quasem. The video will be posted soon, but the synopsis of the talk is below The Making and Unmaking of Social Movements _______________________________________ As hegemonic political formations nation states are repositories of “national values” which in turn produce resistance to such dominance. From these frictions and resistance emerge social movements, movementsthat also hold the symbols of the “nation” or its disintegration. The state on the other hand uses coercive tactics at its disposal to suppress the threats to its legitimacy and dominance. This panel examines a series of questions on the making and unmaking of such social movements, for example,what constitutes the building of such movements? What are the dynamics of such motion? Finally, how do social movements mold an identity for those who constitute the movement(s)?
