Be a judge for the GLENDALE UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT Academic Decathalon… You’re invited to volunteer in the Arizona Academic Decathlon Region II scheduled for February 6 & 7 in Phoenix, AZ at Thunderbird High School. Support the AZ academic athletes for their hard work by volunteering to be a judge at the Academic Decathlon. No prior experience needed! Training will be provided for judges. Contact [email protected] to sign up of for more information. The Academic Decathlon competition is open to twenty six high schools in Arizona. It is a competitive event modeled after the Olympics to simulate academic achievement and honor “athletes of the mind.” The competition provides student the opportunity to participate in an educational forum, which fosters a deep respect for knowledge, cooperation, and self-esteem. Like the decathlon of the ancient Greeks, the Academic Decathlon consists of ten exacting and exciting events. But, while the Greek events were contests of physical strength, the Academic Decathlon is a contest of academic strength. The Academic Decathlon includes tests in Art, Music, Literature, Mathematics, Economics, Science, and Social Science. In addition, there are communication tests that include writing an essay, the delivery of a prepared and an impromptu speech and an interview.
