Be aware! On this Easter Day there is a group of people set up in front of Wal-Mart in Yuba City CA that claim to be helping LOCAL homeless veterans. As in veterans in our, the Yuba-Sutter, area. Charles stopped and talked to them on our way to pick up a few last minute items for our dinner. At first we were told that this group was collecting donations for the Yuba City VFW. When they were informed that there is no longer a VFW in Yuba City the story quickly changed. They then claimed they were collecting donations on behalf of the American Legion. When pressed however they could not give us a post name or number, neither could they name anyone associated with that organization. They did admit that they do not have a 501c3 non-profit ID. Upon our return home I looked up their website. It is a hinkey operation to say the least. Misspellings and grammatical errors abound. They claim to have an office but only present a P.O. Box. Under their Contact Us information they have a question box. It does show that they are based out of Los Banos, CA. Why would this group travel over 2 hours one way to set up in front of a Wal-Mart? There has to be places closer to their home. Please, PLEASE, do not give your money to this group. If you really wish to support our LOCAL heroes, make a donation to the Yuba-Sutter Veterans Stand Down or the Central Valley Homeless Veterans Assistance Program. There are also other vetted and approved veteran organizations in our area.
