Be cautious of putting a collar that isnt a break-away collar on a cat. It can cause severe injuries if the collar is too loose (space of two fingers between the neck and collar is suggested) and the cat gets a leg through the collar. Thats what happened to Durango (also called Loki), a cat that was saved by Priscilla and Brad. Priscilla had started feeding a cat that she saw in a storm drain near her house in the area of Durango and Peace Way by dropping food through the drain. Upon closer inspection, she saw that Durango had somehow managed to get one of his front legs through the collar. Thankfully, she called LVVHS for assistance, indicating that she and Brad could handle the rescue if LVVHS told them what to do. Brad was given a humane box trap and advice by LVVHS and within two hours of setting the trap, had captured Durango and cut the collar off. LVVHS took over from there, taking the cat to Sunrise Veterinary Clinic the next morning. Although it is difficult to see, Durango has a deep wound where the collar cut through the armpit. Durango will require extensive treatment for infection before having surgery to remove all of the necrotic tissue. Further surgery may be required and it will take some time for this issue to be resolved. A big thank you to Brad and Priscilla for their willingness to get involved!
