Be proud of all that you are, from whatever heritage that may encompass. Africans have a rich history in the world, the majority of which has not been widely told or told accurately. MEDICINE While doctors take the Hippocratic oath, named after Hippocrates, a Greek physician, long taught to be the father of medicine, Africans were practicing medical procedures and documented the internal composition of the human body more than 2,000 years before Hippocrates was born. Read about Imhotep and the Edwin Smith Papyrus, named after the artifacts dealer who acquired this ancient document in 1862. Its not that Hippocrates wasnt a great person in history, its just that to promote him as the father of medicine is not factually correct and ignores world history. STRATEGY You have heard of the great military strategists Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar, but have you also heard of Hannibal, considered to be also one of the worlds greatest military strategists ever? Hannibal was Carthaginian, a civilization centered around the Phoenecian city-state of Carthage, located in Northern Africa during ancient times (northeast of modern day Tunisia) and a major center of trade. Hannibal won many victories against the great Roman Empire and occupied much of Italy for 15 years. ARCHITECTURE & ART Moorish Architecture is named after the Moors, people of North Africa who controlled much of Spain, Portugal, and the Pyrenees region of France for hundreds of years. Their artistic and architectural contributions are still present to this day. The Alhambra Palace in Granada is an example of architecture as an art form and one of Spain s most popular tourist attractions with more than 2 million visitors a year. The Pyramids of Egypt, their design and how this ancient civilization (located on the African continent) was able to construct these amazing monuments have confounded the world to this day.
