Beautiful Poem by Dennis Zielke featuring California Chrome #Inspired At the Belmont track in a stall all alone Sat California Chrome so far from home Then did he hear a far-off nicker His ears perked up what was the matter From his stall he ambled out to investigate The sound of galloping he had to authenticate Running in the moonlight was The Queen of The Fillies The great mare Ruffian it gave him the willies She pulled up and came to the rail Called out to Junior let me tell you a tale This is my track it is hallowed ground You will have to beat me to win the Triple Crown Nineteen young colts have come here to win I dispatched eleven myself and said never again What makes you so sure you can do this wonder Do you think you have such command of thunder The young colt did prance and curled his lip He jumped the rail and said let’s get on with it I’m a California Colt bred in the Golden State I’m here on business and I’ve come to take My daddy’s Lucky Pulpit and my mama’s Love the Chase I’m not here for any trouble I’m only here to win the race Then on the rail what did appear Eleven great horses all much revered Affirmed, Sir Barton, Citation and Whirlaway too Omaha, Gallant Fox, Count Fleet and Seattle Slew War Admiral, Assault and the great Big Red Each a Triple Crown winner each long dead Chrome pawed at the ground and considered this unearthly assembly Long dead champions and a dark bay mare who was most unfriendly I accept your challenge and will beat you on your home turf I will race you and show that the Triple Crown I am worth Then out of the gate tore Ruffian and Chrome The dark bay mare was leading the way home Chrome laid back his signature move When the time was right he would then prove Ruffian was tough and her heart was on fire But Chrome pulled out and took it to the wire This one has heart this one he has class Big Red approved and the die was cast Eleven young horses will soon break the gate Their trip around Big Sandy to meet their fate Twelve Champions will stand on the rail that day Eleven great colts and the great filly of dark bay And California Chrome all alone in his stall He alone knows who’s the greatest of them all His owners and his trainer and his fans all around They all love Chrome and hope for the Triple Crown © D.
