Because sometimes there is not enough time to say everything that needs to be said during the weekend: I recently had a conversation with someone who was complaining about some of the inconveniences related to the building renovations at Reynoldsburg UMC, I can empathize—because in one sense—I get it: Life as we know it is changing and we ARE being inconvenienced. Change is never easy, but it is necessary. Sometimes, we lose sight of the things that really matter to God. During that conversation, I tried to remind that person that everything we are doing is in an effort to help our church be better positioned to reach lost people—and help draw them closer to God. They were really not interested. I was sad. As we talked, I was struck by how passionate they were about things that are really secondary to the heart of God—and found myself wondering if they had ever been that passionate about reaching people who are lost. Sometimes—I think we forget. I am reminded of several real life situations that I think capture God’s heart and should capture ours: • 67% of our neighbors and friends do not have a meaningful relationship with Jesus and His church. • They are our friends and co-workers—fellow students and the servers at the restaurant—and the elderly neighbor who does not have anyone near to check on her. • They are the single Moms and Dads who are struggling to make ends meet—the 20-something who is addicted to heroin—and the 30-something who is struggling to find their way in this world. • They are children who are being raised without any Christian influence—youth whose values are being shaped by the internet—and young singles who are desperate to find meaning and purpose for their lives. • They are couples who are in trouble—having bought the lie that our world is selling—and ending up empty and lost. And Jesus LOVES every one of them—His heart is FOR them—and I want us to have His heart. So—the next time you find yourself getting a bit agitated about being inconvenienced as we change around here. Ask yourself if you are being agitated by the things that would break the heart of God. Just a thought...
