Been seeing the costume cost break down making the rounds again. I think its a great idea to give insight how much goes into cosplay behind the scenes. Sadly there has also been this weird backlash of people speaking out about how much money you spend correlates to how dedicated you are to your craft. Honestly, I think it doesnt mean SQUAT if you spend $2,000 or $20 on a costume in terms of your dedication. I think how you present yourself and your craft speaks much louder than than how lighter your wallet is or isnt after making a costume. Personally, Ive always tried to be frugal with my costumes as I dont typically have lots of disposable income. In fact some of my larger and more expensive projects I spend MONTHS buying stuff so I can afford it. That being said, there are times I like to spend a little more on some special and unique for a project Im working on. Other times, some projects I utilize the stash of fabric I have on hand, or recycle parts from older costumes, shop the thrift stores (HELLO PLATOS CLOSET FOR 90% OF MY COSPLAY SHOES) or dollar stores, be a crazy coupon lady, or do multiple outfits of one character as I dont have the cost of wigs/contacts/shoes/common items. Shopping on the cheap also really helped me learn to Make it Work with what I could find (Hi I live in a small town) and what I could afford. They say that when you make a costume you can choose two of the three: Fast. Cheap. Quality. Ive have found it pretty true in my years of making costumes. Now that Im done with my soapbox, here is my quick break down of a costume that is more pricey for me and one that was cheap! I admit with Grace I was trying to make it as cheap as possible and ended up using a lot of supplies I had on hand (Worbla, Woodglue, primer, gold paints, some fabric dye, shoe paint, casting supplies, gold fabric)) and recycled things (wig, wefts, tinsel, bra, lashes, makeup). Rei on the other hand is a great example of making something cheap, yet is still a super fun costume! Happy crafting guys!
