Been thinking about something lately, particularly based on recent FB posts. I dont usually express myself as well as Id like, but here goes. I will not be shopping on Thanksgiving. For businesses who choose to remain closed on Thanksgiving, congratulations for making a decision based on your convictions. But for those who are expressing an almost righteous indignation for the companies that choose to open let me ask you if your attitude is the same for: 1. Airlines that fly on Thanksgiving Day 2. Restaurants that serve dinners both dine in and take out 3. Movie theaters that premiere expected blockbusters 4. Hotels, resorts, ski slopes etc. for people who want to get away for the holiday, and....the big one for many Michiganians 4. Enjoyed a football game after Thanksgiving dinner? These organizations arent doing these things for their own enjoyment...they are doing these things for YOUR entertainment and enjoyment, and *their profit*. Thousands and thousands of employees working in positions that could easily be eliminated for the day. We know that medical and emergency personnel are on duty. We expect it and its right...but there are a LOT of people working for the entertainment of Americans that are taken for granted. I know the point is supposed to be whether or not people choose to shop on Thanksgiving, and businesses that try to lure them in. I have yet to hear someone say they REALLY want to stay home, cook turkey, visit with family etc, but they HAVE to go to Wal-Mart to buy a TV that was cheaper in October! Follow your convictions...choose how you want to spend your day...and let others do the same. If you come across someone in tears because they have to work on Thanksgiving, offer to make them a meal when they are off (were adapting our dinner time to accommodate my RN daughter-in-law who will be working...it wasnt difficult.) But for goodness sakes, if your activities of the day in ANY way are affected by someone else working on Thanksgiving, please remember to be extra Thankful! ;)
