Been working on the plan for our own woodland with the man from woodland trust who provide 66% of the funding. Its going to be about 1.25 acres and will enable us to become self sufficient in firewood in 5-7 years as its to be coppice as well as providing habitat for birds, butterflies and bats (one day). Trees that they provide will include Hornbeam and Oak (long term top canopy), silver birch, wild cherry, field maple, small leaf lime, rowan and sweet chestnut (middle canopy) and hazel, hawthorn,, dog wood, and dog rose at the bottom. So thats 500 trees to plant before the end of winter as well as fencing. Any suggestions for a name for the wood most welcome. Have a look at what can be achieved in 5-7 years woodlandtrust.org.uk/en/planting-woodland/why-plant-trees/Pages/default.aspx#.UnKOWPnIa3s.
