Before David Lean directed THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, and DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, he was known as a director of Dickens adaptations. But before that, Lean made four movies in collaboration with Noel Coward. I came across the Criterion collection of these films, which include IN WHICH WE SERVE and BRIEF ENCOUNTER. I was curious about Leans erly work, but what knocked me out was my discovery of Noel Coward, a famous name about which I knew nothing. Actor, writer, director, producer, singer, song writer, and film-score composer. Wow. One of the major talents of the 20th century. Im now on a Noel Coward kick, learning everything I can about him.
