Being back in Tennessee, Ive thought a lot about how real or not real the media coverage of so-called red states is day to day. I dont see any nutty Tea Partiers walking around town. I see hippies, punks, yuppies, country folks. I see the global mix we see everywhere. The only tinge of Tea Party reality Ive felt is walking into a business and being next to a customer carrying a gun. The gun issue is very real. On this one issue, the only one I see, Im split. Im certainly not going to argue citizens should not have the right to arm themselves. I dont have any faith in the government. At the same time, I dont think people should carry guns in public. It sends a message that you - the gun carrier - are dominating the space we are inhabiting. A bar, a coffee shop. It makes me afraid to speak my mind. It makes me feel like I have no control. Otherwise, Im pro guns. There is no need to carry them openly in public.
