Beloved Avant Gardeners, This is a call to arms! Avant Gardening in Eugene has begun to boom. The desire to create a gentler, kinder world starting with our food system is growing in collective consciousness, and the activity this group has facilitated is proving to be contagious. More and more people are offering their spaces to host work parties, and a dedicated core of Avant-Gardeners have been instrumental in organizing and completing a wide variety of projects. In order to maintain our effectiveness, we need to deepen our commitments and skills, as well as our organizational efficacy if we plan to work toward food sovereignty. Keep in mind that this is merely the opinion of a small group of core organizational members, but we have several inevitabilities we need to address if we want to we want to be a force for REAL CHANGE. The first is bringing in more people to the evolving dynamic of support. Quite a few folks have put in a lot of sweat, scheming and love into this effort, but if the organizers want to be effective in the garden, we need others to step forward to help with the administrative and physical efforts the group. Beautifully there has been a modest increase in volunteer activity, and as involvement grows we need to have constructive projects that maximize our shared resources. How can you help? What is your dream for this project? We need each and every one of you to begin the process of self-organization, while keeping open the lines of communication. We have the capacity, as a community, to accomplish a lot this year if we can come together with our friends and neighbors and find meaningful answers to the global/local food crisis. It is our position that we need to focus of efforts on short, medium, and long-term goals. Short term projects would include skill shares and garden parties, where we are looking to establish a more cohesive scheduling procedure. In terms of mid-term goals, a few Avant-Gardeners have been involved in the organization of the Spring Propagation Fair. We see it as a way to involve ourselves in the stewardship of some of the cutting edge, locally adapted fruit trees and row crops in our bioregion. This event will be a special educational opportunity with chances to hear from some of the area’s leading Avant-Gardeners. This free event, however, cannot operate without the support of volunteers, like yourself. Nick Routledge, one of our devoted Garden Gurus, has talked about organizing long-term efforts to emphasize our ability to grow food year-round. We hope others will come up with new goals and organize themselves around them. Keep in touch!
