Below is an email, one of many I receive from companies who are interested in my work... and using images of it for free in a trend forecasting book. Which they sell for around 1000EUR each. I find their use of the word collaboration in this context very troubling, not to mention free exchange, not based on any budget for both sides. As there has been some interesting and lively debate here recently on the legality and ethics of unpaid internships in the creative industries, I thought I would ask for some views on this related area... have you had any similar requests? What do you think I should include in my reply? In our current research for the interior and lifestyle book 2016, we found some of your projects very interesting and appealing to our recent themes. We really like your projects and would love to use your work for the coming season in our Trendbook, on our website and for the Trend Audiovisual. As a trend forecasting agency we produce several trend books each year that we sell exclusively to our clients. Usually we print 250 pieces, which are distributed internationally for one year. All images we use will be credited with the name of the photographer, designer or artist. It is a free exchange, not based on any budget for both sides. Unfortunately we are not able to send you an original sample of our book, but if your image is chosen by [us], we are happy to send you a nice photo of the doubleside-spread including your image. If you agree and you are interested in a collaboration please send us high resolution pictures of your weaving projects (and if it is possible process pictures, close-ups and details of your project). If possible, please send us a high resolution, to ensure your images are of a good quality (minimum 1000x1000px with 300 dpi). We would be happy to hear from you.
