Below is an update from AFSA HQ website. v/r MSgt Galvan Inching Toward a Government Shutdown Lawmakers have just 12 days to act before the “chance” of a government shutdown becomes “reality.” Last week, House leaders shelved a continuing resolution (CR) that would have keep the government running through mid-December to to the lack of votes to secure its passage. The primary sticking point rests with the issue of funding Obamacare. Many House lawmakers want to defund this program and they openly state they won’t support appropriations legislation unless defunding that program takes place. Soon, House leaders are expected to propose another CR that strips funding for the healthcare program while allowing other federal agencies to run through December 15. The move is expected to lure enough votes to propel the bill through the House. Meanwhile their partners on the other side of the Hill have been standing by in “wait and see” mode. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Mitch McConnell, the Minority Leader agree on one thing: there is no “Plan B” if the House effort falls through. It’s up to the House to act; we’re waiting for them to act.” Reid said, in an obvious reference to the constitutional requirement that appropriations bills commence in the House. Looking forward, it is highly unlikely the planned House bill could clear the Senate, and the White House has vowed to block any legislation that delays, defunds or repeals the healthcare program. Put your seatbelt on folks, there’s a lot of turbulence ahead!
