Ben Sinks The Obama administration announced Monday that it had recovered a record $4.2 billion in fraudulently billed charges from medical providers and others who tried to pull a fast one on Uncle Sam. In part, the recovered haul comes as a result of beefed up enforcement measures put in place by the Affordable Care Act, which is commonly referred to as “Obamacare.” “Our historic effort to take on the criminals who steal from Medicare and Medicaid is paying off: We are gaining the upper hand,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement. In 2011, the government was able to recover $4.1 billion, adding to a four-year haul that is more than twice the amount that the administration of George W. Bush was able to locate. Over Obama’s first four years in office, his administration recouped $14.9 billion in healthcare fraud in government programs. During the last four years that Bush was in office, just $6.7 billion was recovered.
