Benjamin Orr died on this day in 2000. Along with Ric Ocasek they were lead vocalists for The Cars. Orr was also the bass player and a dominant songwriter. He wrote and had the lead vocal mantle for some their best known songs, including “Candy-O” Just What I Needed, Lets Go, and Drive. In 1986 Orr released the solo album “The Lace” to moderate sales and reaching top 30 in the US the single Stay The Night claimed a lot of airplay. The Cars’ self titled LP was a smash!! The album charted for nearly 3 years and almost could be viewed as a “greatest hits”. The rekid has flavours of Roxy Music and Velvet Underground, it is sleek, powerful & poppy new wave. And as it is was released in 1978 one could argue that is the first New Wave rekid from the US of A. One of the most popular new wave songs ever, Just What I Needed, is an obvious highlight, as are such familiar hits as Good Times Roll, My Best Friends Girl, and Youre All Ive Got Tonight. But like most consummate rock albums, the lesser-known compositions are just as exhilarating: Dont Cha Stop, Bye Bye Love, All Mixed Up, and Moving in Stereo . Classic LP 9.5/10
