Bhim Singh’s tributes to Narasimha Rao on his 92nd Birth Anniversary Prof. Bhim Singh, Chief Patron of National Panthers Party and Member of National Integration Council while addressing Panthers Party activists in New Delhi paid highest tributes to 9th Prime Minister of India, Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao who took over as Congress Prime Minister at a time when the entire country was passing through a grave economic and political crises. He described Shri Narasimha Rao as a selfless politician, renowned freedom fighter and farsighted statesman in the Congress Party who steered India through the economic tempest with the power of his mind and commitment. His farsightedness could be appreciated from the fact that he picked up a non-political person, Dr. Manmohan Singh, and gave him ministerial work to restore the economic order which had literally collapsed when Mr. V.P. Singh opted out of PM’s Office. It was Narasimha Rao who managed to keep the volcanoes of militancy under control through his diplomacy and international relations. Prof. Bhim Singh recalled that Shri Narasimha Rao had ignored the critics within the party and the government in assigning the work to me for improving public relations with the international community from Palestine to the United Nations. It was because of Shri Narasimha Rao that I could lead a strong team to Vienna, Austria to attend 15-day International Human Rights Conference where my team created a history by making the world to understand that the Kashmiries were neither against India nor against the Indian Army. The entire terrorism in the state was created by foreign powers who intended to sabotage unity and peace. It was because of Narasimha Rao’s blessing that I succeeded in creating a strong impact on the prominent OIC members in the Casablanca (Morocco) Conference in 1993. It was because of Narasimha Rao that his government supported my writ petition in the Supreme Court seeking election to the State Assembly when Election Commission of India did not want to hold Assembly election. It was Narasimha Rao who brushed aside the conspiracy of a group of Indian politicians in connivance with the National Conference leaders. Even former President, Mr. APJ Abdul Kalam called him “patriotic statesman who believed that the nation is bigger than the political philosophy”. It was he who had planned to upgrade India’s nuclear power which is later experimented by Prime Minister, Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Prof. Bhim Singh revealed that it was Shri Narasimha Rao, the then General Secretary-AICC in 1976 who saved Youth Congress from disaster when pro-Sanjay Gandhi group attempted to throw out IYC President Mr.P.R. Dasmunsi and installed Sanjay Gandhi in his place. It was only Bhim Singh and his couple of friends who opposed Sanjay Gandhi’s coup and Shri Narasimha Rao upheld Bhim Singh’s proposition to keep status quo. Again in 1984 after the brutal assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi, it was Narasimha Rao as Union Home Minister who saved several Sikh families from the wrath of the attackers. Prof. Bhim Singh revealed that he had called Shri Narasimha Rao after midnight seeking his urgent intervention to save Shri Harcharan Singh Josh and his relatives who were besieged by the hooligans a day following the assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi. It was Mr. Narasimha Rao’s intervention after midnight that hundreds of Sikh families gathered at the house of Shri H.S. Josh were rescued. This was greatness of Mr. Narasimha Rao as a Congress leader, as a Home Minister and then the Prime Minister of India. Prof. Bhim Singh recollected saying that Mr. Narasimha Rao had a great vision and he did not allow the sycophants and the mercenaries to stand between the PM and his national commitment. It was during his premiership, that Prof. Bhim Singh got an ample opportunity to represent India in various international foras in connection with the situation in J&K to expose terrorism and the enemies of peace. The Panthers Party paid rich tributes to Shri Narasimha Rao on the occasion.
