Bianca Ware, my niece who studies dance at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee -Peck School of The Arts . Please take time to read an article written about her love of dance and how she plans to change the world through dance to help those in the deaf world around the world--she is pure inspiration and my "shero." "I want to help deaf dancers follow their dreams to be successful in the dance world. I want to give them the opportunity to prove to the world that they can dance!" When Bianca Ware began her studies at UW-Milwaukee in 2008, she intended to pursue a degree in Engineering. After switching her major to Geoscience, she came to realize that neither of these paths fit her true calling: dance. As a deaf artist, Ware was unsure how exactly she would fit into the world of dance. Still, she wanted to follow her passions. She prepared herself by taking courses for non-majors in ballet, African dance, and modern dance. With support from her professors and peers, Ware aced her audition and was accepted into the Peck School of the Arts Dance program, and she has never been happier. “It doesn’t matter how bad of a day I’m having,” she says. “My mood is changed completely when I’m dancing.” Ware has progressed beyond all expectations, as she has begun to create challenging choreography that incorporates the use of American Sign Language. “As a deaf person, I naturally express myself through movements,” she says. “Therefore dancing is my way of communicating with others and expressing how I feel when words fail me.” With encouragement from her professors, Ware’s dreams continue to grow. She hopes to travel the world to study different deaf cultures and their sign languages in order to develop a universal dance technique. The Ware Technique will be used to help Ware continue to develop sign language-based choreography and teach it to other deaf dancers from across the world. Her ultimate dream is to establish an International School of Dance and Performance Company for the Deaf, which would provide deaf dancers with opportunities to learn, teach, perform and choreograph.
