Saturday 26th October 2013 “Leave it one more year, sir,...and perhaps it will bear fruit next year...” REFLECTION Jesus invites his audience to repent (literally change their mind) in order to enjoy eternal life. Luke 13:1-9 is unique to Luke. It has a controversy story (13:1-5) and a parable (13:6-9). In the first part there are two tragedies mentioned by Luke. Jesus pointed out that in both incidents the victims of these tragedies were not especially evil. Jesus gives his listeners a warning that sudden death was a real possibility. It is quite striking how both groups were killed in Jerusalem. When we read this account in the light of the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE the phrase ‘you too will perish” (13:3,5) takes on a new meaning. It invites the reader to repent of his/her past sins. The subsequent parable symbolizes a last opportunity for the readers to repent before becoming subject to divine judgement. When and how do I repent? ~ Luke 13:1-9
