Biblical Duties for Husbands A husband has much responsibility to his wife, according to the Bible. As a husband you must respect your wife, honor her, protect her and also be active with disciplining and raising your children. When you fulfill these responsibilities you are, according to the Bible, acting out the responsibilities that God has set forth. 1. Leader and Provider The first role and duty the man has to his wife is being a leader and provider. Husband is head of the wife (Ephesians 5:23). This is in all aspects of physical and spiritual areas. The primary role for the husband is to lead his family in prayers and Bible teachings. His secondary role is to make enough money to raise and support his family. This does not mean he must dominate the relationship completely; a leader is a guide and director. As the husband, you should consult and consider your wife when it comes to important decisions. 2. Love Your Wife Husbands, love your wife as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it...So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself (Eph 5:22, 28-31). As a husband, you should love your wife above all other human beings. You should cherish her and treat her with tenderness and affection. This also means that you must communicate with your wife socially, mentally, physically and verbally. Only showing affection or interest in her because of her body will cause her to think she is just there for physical pleasure. Communication is a vital way to show your love for your wife. 3. Honor Your Wife Do not disrespect your wife by not giving her the support she may need at a crucial time. According to the book of Peter, a husband must, live with their wives in an understanding way: showing respect to the wife as a weaker partner and as a co-heir of the grace of life (Peter 3:7). Do not ridicule her or ignore her. If she is in a situation you do not understand, try to imagine what she is feeling to understand her plight. As a husband you must control your temper and not allow it to harm your wife or make her feel inferior. Understand that the both of you are not perfect like Christ is and that you must work hard to honor each other. 4. Aid in Disciplining and Raising Children He who spares the rod hates his son, but he how loves him is careful to discipline him (Proverbs 13:24). As the leader of the house, you must help your wife raise your children. If you see that they are not respecting her as a mother and caretaker you must guide them to respecting their mother. Set an example by showing your children that hard work and direct communication is the correct way address difficult situations in life. Lead your children through their spiritual development through guidance and prayer.
