Big news here regarding yet another of what may be as many as SIX! new Cap Metro rail corridor/ Lance Armstrong Bikeway redevelopment projects: that of the former Brown Distributing (budweiser) facility @ 411 Chicon. Already we have just seen this year Endeavors completion of the modest office building just to the east with FD2S/ Big Red Dog/ Enviro Media, and JCLs residential building kiddy-corner from Scoot Inn. Richard Korriss Corazon along East 5th St. @ San Marcos/ Medina will be soon be moving in tenants including the Bike Haus. Ardent is building the now first of more to come larger multi-family mixed-use projects: Seven-East @ Robert Martinez, which is going vertical as we speak. Of couse Mondays news was Cap Metros (against neighborhood desires) decision selecting Endeavor to redevelop the Saltillo District 11 acres rather than the affordable housing oriented/ C3-SXSW hq Saltillo Collaborative proposal. Now we hear about the city owned Brown site, and at the same time now two back-hoes sit parked @ 1700 east 4th street at the former El Lago tortilla factory, where I have heard from Heart of Texas Demolition that: ..., the developer and design firms (Big Red Dog/ DWG) have instructed us to save the entire mural wall. This project dubbed Saltillo Station is reported to be a true mixed-use project including a significant office component, and plans to extend the bikrway from Comal to Chicon opposite Yellow Jacket Social Club. We will soon no doubt also be hearing about the redevelopment of Balcones Recyclings former facility @ Pedernales, whose goodbye to the neighborhood was last years BurnerBash, where Balcones rail-cars were tagged solidifying Austins international stature in writers communities across the planet..., following up on the 2012/13 blowing up of writing during those SXSW events. We are also poised to hear news regarding Arnold Oils confirmed impending move from their 6th and Comal facility, where designs have already been released showing yet another mixed-use residential complex. Then on 4th Street adjacent to IH35 and Cothrons Lock is the historic Austin Foundry and its iconic crowned smokestack. The stack sits opposite the soon to appear Medina Street pocket park to be built between The Corazon and the future public market/ now event space Market Fair, and connected to each other by one of three paseo pedestrian streets called for by the Saltillo District Masterplan. The scrap metal yard figured prominently in one of the Saltillo District R.F.P. proposals. There may be other proposals or projects hiding in the weeds, but this is certain: the transformation of East Austin into a thriving/ more dense and populated/ creative enterprise and entertainment zone, defined by transt, a walkable and highly urbane landscape and biycle-oriented development. After 20 years, the Lance Armstrong Bikeway will extend east of IH35 4th St. undercrossing and thread Itself to Chicon az designed a decade ago. Get you reservations secured for front row seats at Wright Bros. Brew and Brew/ Scoot Inn/ Texas Coffee Traders/ Yellow Jacket Social Club and dont give up your table, as if development blows up here as we are seeing across Austin, you could concievably see as many as 13 (yes, thirteen!) tower cranes hovering over East Austin along the Redline and bikeway.
