Bike riding is a great form of exercise for kids. Here are some bicycle safety tips as kids head back to school this Fall. • Inspect Your Child’s Bike You’ll want to look over (or take to a bike shop) the brakes, wheels, seat, handlebars, pedals, tires, axle nuts and bearings and chain, so that your child has a safe bike to ride. • Insist on a Helmet They may not be the most fashionable item, but helmets are very important to safe bike riding. Insist that your child wear one when riding! • Ride Smart Select the safest route and use it. Always follow traffic signs. Be careful around driveways. Encourage your child to walk the bike when crossing busy streets. • Learn Hand Signals Teach your child to use correct hand signals to let others know of his/her plans: Left turn: left hand and arm held straight out, pointing left Right turn: left hand and arm held straight up or right arm held straight out, pointing right Stop: left hand and arm held straight down • Road Safety Talk with your child about basic road safety when riding a bike: ride with (not against) traffic and on the right side of the road, ride with someone else if possible, and always ride single file. • Reflect on It Tell your child not to ride his/her bike when it’s not daylight out. If he/she does need to ride in the early morning or evening hours, make sure his/her bike has reflectors on it. Wearing neon, bright or reflective clothing is a good idea as well, and so is a headlight for the bike.
