Bill Graham put a billboard on the side of Winterland 36 years ago - TopicsExpress

Bill Graham put a billboard on the side of Winterland 36 years ago for New Years Eve 1978, the night the Grateful Dead closed the dilapidated old Arena, which had an appointment with the wreckers ball. Theyre not the best at what they do, it read, Theyre the only ones that do what they do! A huge banner of the Deads skull and roses emblem always hung from the rafters inside Winterland like the home teams pennant. The Dead played the old ice rink at Post and Steiner 59 times beginning in 1968, including four New Years Eves. In a news conference two weeks before the event, Bill Graham speculated he could have sold 500,000 tickets! Before we get all teary-eyed about the Closing of Winterland, dear reader, you must remember this: The place was a dump. Ah,….. but WHAT a dump! So many incredible concerts took place there with more All-Star bands that I have room to mention! Its original back entrance door for musicians was being offered up for sale on Wolfgangs Vault for $1,000,000. Spare change anyone? This Poster From The Past known as the Blue Rose was created by the genius of the Dynamic Duo of Rock Art….. Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. A true classic poster that will ever be remembered for this awesome event in San Francisco history and Rock n Roll. It does not appear in any of the numbered poster series. Absolutely worth Sharing with a friend! Must be Approved by Professor Poster
