Birdman (2014) Nothing new is ever invented, ideas are just rearranged, and yet Iñirratus latest film truly redefines what cinema can do. An aging Hollywood celebrity seeks outward recognition and inward fulfillment by launching a daring project as a Director/Writer/Lead Actor. He seeks recognition, to be embraced by the Others gaze and finds himself: Old, naked, human. This film is about the universal plight for meaning and it does not shy away from existential dialogue, yet it does so while laughing at pretentiousness. The photography is theatrical and masterful. The editing is seamlessly arranged to appear to be one continuous shot. The soundtrack is playful and unusually led by percussion. All of these elements are bound together by an honest script that pokes fun at Hollywood, at serious art and at movie-going itself. No better film has been made this century, perhaps none will.
