#BixbyFifty #Day21 Today I am grateful for the gift of humour. There is nothing better than being able to laugh, whether at a comic’s jokes, TV show, life or myself – especially myself, because I do a lot of dumb things! My early love for comedy was fueled by British TV, I couldn’t get enough of their humour, especially Monty Python. The 5 remaining Pythons are doing a final stage show in July in London and I desperately wanted to go but it was just out of reach financially which really sucked. When I was a teenager I watched their TV series and movies over and over, memorized the lines from the Holy Grail, did skits with my brothers [The Cheese Shop, Dead Parrot, Spam and the Gumby’s come to mind] into my 20’s and probably 30’s. Not everyone understood it but we were endlessly entertained. My Dad loved to laugh, in the last years of his life the comedy channel was on all the time. One of my childhood memories is of all of us watching a Brain Keith comedy, it was a family comedy based in Hawaii – I remember Dad laughing so hard he started to cough his crazy smoker’s cough and couldn’t breathe – I remember him passing out on the floor. A terrifying memory in some ways but when Dad laughed he usually ended up coughing, but he really liked to laugh. Another time I had really gotten into Cheech and Chong and I had just bought Los Cochinos, the album had a cover that looked like a car door and when you slid it open the door looked like it was full of weed. I asked if I could play it while we were having supper and I remember us laughing to Up his nose, Sergeant Stadanko, Basketball Jones – it was like nothing else out there, and my parents allowed it. It was pretty risqué with the themes and drug references but I don’t remember being criticized for it. I was very lucky to grow up in a house where we were really encouraged – generally – to be interested in whatever we wanted. I feel very blessed that I was raised in that kind of family and it certainly shaped who I am today. Recently I was able to see John Cleese live in Calgary and it was a highlight for me, bringing back so many memories and laughs. I leave you with these words form the Holy Grail King Arthur: Look, you stupid Bastard. Youve got no arms left. Black Knight: Yes I have. King Arthur: Look! Black Knight: Its just a flesh wound. MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL
