Blast from the past: Two years ago when federal riding boundaries - TopicsExpress

Blast from the past: Two years ago when federal riding boundaries were being redrawn, the first proposal from the commission had Milton as a single riding. Through the process that changed and they lost the Federal Milton riding, and instead the town was going to be divided in two. I did a series of blog posts about it in 2012. You can see a few here: ward8.ca/s/97 and ward8.ca/s/98. One resident who gets the lions share of the credit is Paul Virdo. In fact, I can confidently tell you that if it wasnt for Virdo, we probably would not have had the Milton riding! As a town councillor, I brought in a motion to the town council to fight splitting Milton. I also convinced the rest of the council to unanimously oppose the proposal that did not give Milton a unified voice in Ottawa. We fought the proposal at the Commission unanimously as a council and eventually got them to reverse it, which gave us a single Federal riding covering all of Milton. As a community, thats a good thing. It gives us a single representative in Ottawa to represent us. Out of all people running to become your Milton candidate for the Liberal Party, I am the only one who has actually represented you in an elected office. Just like I fight for you in the Town Council (even issues such as these that no one else pays attention to), I hope to represent your issues in Ottawa.
