Blast from the past here. Justin Reilly kindly found this elsewhere. There is so much that is plain inaccurate here, let alone what is conspicuous by its absence, given a particular spin that is untenable when one considers the whole picture etc. some of which I address in the book. It is interesting to see how Wessely constructs rhetorical pieces: even to the point he claims to know what Eliot Slater (a critic of the belief in hysteria) would think. As people will know, psychogenic explanations for physical illness dog medicine and psychiatry, and Simon Wessely is not the only person engaged in promoting these. Nevertheless, he has been so prolific, so rhetorical, I do find analysing his writing, from time to time, from a context of sociological discourse analysis, very useful, as it offers explanation for some of the major problems this community experiences as regards lack of understanding of the illness, of being treated so badly by state and medical agencies etc. However, it has also to be remembered how easily key British charities, for example, have taken up his rhetoric uncritically and reproduced it, adding to the muddled thinking. meactionuk.org.uk/wessely_speech_120594.htm
