“Blueprint for Building a Governing Church” (Part 14). Beloved, a governing church is a training centre. It provides the type of doctrinal material different from the mainstream preaching or teaching. The material is not meant to excite but to build and perfect the Body of Christ (Eph. 4:11-14). You find this type of strategy taking place throughout the ministry of Paul (Acts 15:36). It is a strategy characterised by the style of presentation of the Word of God. It is not a kind of ‘hit-and-run’ style of teaching, but time is spent as described in Acts 20:7-12. The same pattern was prevailing also in the ministry of the Lord Jesus: He would preach to the crowds in parables, and then expound the Word and teach His disciples after the crowds had departed (Mark 4:34). Training works more like the rain that falls gently over a number of hours or days, allowing the learners to soak in it, unlike a thunderstorm that falls heavily over a short period of time but never has the time to saturate the soil with water. This latter kind of rain does not accomplish much, whereas the former will give the climatic system a chance to draw from itself through processes like evaporation, condensation and precipitation to where it continues to rain and water the earth over a lengthy period of time. Disciples understand and appreciate an atmosphere where the teaching of the Word is done systematically in order to train and establish them instead of rushing through the ‘headlines’ of the subject without allowing it to sink in.
