Board of Trustees Meeting October 9, 2013 PLRD Achievement Exam & Diploma Exam Results PLRDs achievement on the provincial exams has improved this year by about 5% overall. We continue to focus on improving these results at both the standard of excellence and at the acceptable standard. This year, PLRD’s student achievement at the acceptable standard exceeded provincial achievement in all subjects except in grade nine social studies where we matched the provincial achievement levels. In keeping with the inclusive education mandate, PLRD’s participation rate on these exams also exceeded provincial participation. PLRD’s achievements at the standard of excellence were within provincial achievement levels for all subjects. PLRD will continue to focus instruction on higher order thinking skills that include application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation in order to continue to see improvements in student achievement at the standard of excellence. On Diploma Examinations, PLRD students achieved equal to or higher than the province at the acceptable standard in Biology 30 (97.1%), English 30-1(91.4%), English 30-2 (100%), Physics 30 (96.2%), Social 30-1(100%), and Social 30-2 (96.7). PLRD will continue to focus on improving student achievement in Chemistry and Mathematics, and in all subjects at the standard of excellence. A comparison of the accountability pillar results from last year to this year shows dramatic improvement overall. Note that PLRD has achieved a rating of “excellence” in safe and caring schools, compared to “acceptable” the previous year; “acceptable” in student learning opportunities compared to issue; “good” in student learning grades K-9, which remains the same as the previous year’s rating; “good” in grades 10-12 learning achievements rated last year as an issue; and, preparation for life-long learning remained at a rating of “good”; We went from “issue” to “excellent” regarding parent involvement; and from “concern” to “acceptable” regarding continuous improvement. PLRD has done very well refocusing our schools and division on both excellence and continued improvement. PLRD’s results can be viewed at plrd.ab.ca/node/56 . 2013 - 2014 September 30 Final Enrolment This year’s total student enrolment is 1389.0 as of September 30, 2013. This number is 2.5 up from the final September 30, 2012 total of 1386.5. The division has decreased by 6.5 full time equivalent students (FTE) from the March 2013 projected enrolment of 1395.5 FTE, so some budgetary adjustments will need to be made. J.C.
