Since 4:00 this morning, I have sat and worked on genealogy, enjoying the peaceful stillness afforded by the early hours of dawn. Occasionally, I looked out the window and watched as light took form and erased the darkness and became day. Then, just about 7:00, the sounds of sirens penetrated the peacefulness. Someone at a neighboring house began clamoring on some object. Neighborhood dogs began barking. The peaceful stillness I had just enjoyed for the past 3 hours suddenly ceased to exist. And, people ask me why do I get up at 4:00 a.m. It is because, at that hour, the world (at least Memphis, TN) is at rest, and the hour affords me a time of quietness that I cannot otherwise find.
