SQNLDR Timothy Cantrill cannot be positive he was one of the first two people to go paddling on the highest peak in Australia. But it seems to be a fair assumption. In February he and LCDR Ralph Illyes went stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) in the highest lake in Australia, the glacial Lake Cootapatamba – 2040m above sea level and 800m south of the summit of Mt Kosciuszko in NSW. “We were the first we know of,” he says, having asked around in SUP circles. Besides, if someone else comes forward he has a fall-back position. Well, a fall-in position to be precise. During his first paddle in the lake, which was around dusk, his board hit a rock and he went tumbling into the icy water. So if another SUPer does come forward and claim to have got there first, SQNLDR Cantrill might be able to claim, yes, but he was the first to take a topple from a board into the lake. He has witnesses, too. As well as LCDR Illyes, a man and two boys who were camping nearby came over for a look and saw the whole thing. SQNLDR Cantrill actually found the impromptu dip quite refreshing after trudging up the mountain, towing 50kg of SUP and camping gear for 1½ hours.
