Boat Christening at ZK Dock! As a member of the Highport - TopicsExpress

Boat Christening at ZK Dock! As a member of the Highport family, youve probably spent at least one 4th of July weekend here. If you have within the last 10 years, then you probably noticed an interesting event on ZK dock. Some of you may have even idled your boats to watch the event. Every year, ZK dock members host a traditional boat christening for new members as well as current members who bought new boats over the past year. This annual event brings the dock members together and fosters good boating practices, camaraderie, and team building. Steeped in cultural traditions, boat christening dates back to the first appearances of water craft. Beyond simply breaking champagne over their boats, the U.S. Navy also includes a line ceremony for its sailors crossing the equator. The members of ZK dock carry on this time-honored tradition on July 4th weekend to honor our Nations soldiers as well as fallen sailors. With the arrival of King Neptune, Davy Jones and other dignitaries, the ceremony kicks off with a talent show, a spicy breakfast and progresses to a court hearing and a royal bath. New boat members start the ceremony as pollywogs and come out as shellbacks. While this may seem all fun and games, theres an air of sincerity underlaying every aspect of the ceremony. This year was especially poignant with an a cappella rendition of the National Anthem.
