Bradninch take survival bid to final day - but it might have been so much less of an ask on the last day! The 1 st XI suffered a desperately disappointing final ball defeat – they needed a four off the final delivery at Torquay to fashion a massive win, but Will Squire was stumped going for the big hit and the home side bagged a three run win. The hosts batted first and were three down inside 15 overs with just 42 runs on the board. A 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket took them to 117-4 and that in turn became 166-5, before the middle order saw them to a close of 217-7, they chalked up 55 in the last five overs. Ross Acton returned the superb figures of 3-15 from ten overs, three of which were maidens, but Will Squire was the chief wicket taker with his figures of 4-57 from ten. These two were the only wicket takers. The three other bowlers were Paul Nott ( 0-65), Jackson Thompson (0-45), both from ten overs and Chris Acton, the latter’s ten overs seeing him return the excellent figures of 0-26. Jackson Thompson, as ever, led the charge with the reply racing at a run-a-ball to the loss of the first wicket, sadly that of leading run scorer JT for 27 at 39-1 after 6.4 overs. Greg Maher and skipper Tim Piper then took charge and the pair batted very well, adding 108, taking it 135-2 after 32 overs with Maher out for 53 from a 109-ball stay at the wicket. Ross Acton joined the skipper and he was next out, but not before his better-then-a-run-a-ball 33 from 30 balls with five 4s and one 6. Roscoe was third man down with victory just 31runs away with still 37 balls to be bowled and seven wickets in hand. Dan Hardy was in and out – his five ball stay resulting in one run being added to the score and it was 190-4 midway through the 45 th over. Joe Webb was fifth man out – caught for an 8-ball knock of ten with the total then 203-5; 15 runs were needed for a precious win and there were still 22 balls to be bowled! The ‘killer’ wicket was that of skipper Tim Piper who was sixth man out for a wonderful two-hours-and-44-minute stay at the crease that saw him face 119 balls, hitting four 4s in a knock of 69. With Piper gone and five balls remaining, seven runs were required. Bradninch take survival bid to final day - but it might have been so much less of an ask on the last day! With Piper gone and five balls remaining, seven runs were required. However, that proved too much with Will Squire stumped off the final delivery of the match with Bradninch closing on 214-7, beaten by three runs and having to settle for seven points. The defeat does NOT mean relegation from the top flight after a five year stay is certain –clearly IF Cornwood were to only get the same points from their final game against title chasing Exmouth (who require seven points to be crowed champions on the final day from their game at Cornwood), then Bradninch can stay up by taking 20 points from their home game with Bovey Tracey who were knocked out of the title race on the penultimate Saturday, beaten by a big margin by Sidmouth. With one round of matches to play – the key final day games are; BRADNINCH versus Bovey Tracey and CORNWOOD versus Exmouth. Heading into that game the table reads: Exmouth 270 Sidmouth 254 Bovey Tracey 243 North Devon 205 200 Exeter Plymouth 190 Torquay 175 Cornwood 161 BRADNINCH 146 Budleigh 132 , that proved too much with Will Squire stumped off the final delivery of the match with Bradninch closing on 214-7, beaten by three runs and having to settle for seven points.
