Brandon Neuman deserves re-election In the four years since he became a state representative, Brandon Neuman has grown confidently into the role. The soon-to-be 33-year-old Democrat has shaken off the tentative quality of his early campaigns that made us question if he was ready for the job. The former Canon-McMillan High School wrestling star has shown that he can work well with colleagues and constituents with a minimum of fuss and showboating. There is no compelling reason for voters in that district to deny him another two years as their voice in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives. Like his colleague Jim Christiana in the 15th District, Neuman highlights his bipartisan credentials, pointing to his work to get a prescription drug monitoring bill through the House earlier this month and his efforts to strengthen whistleblower laws and stop “pay to- play” politics. He also believes, sensibly, that the commonwealth needs to be more focused on rehabilitating small-time drug offenders rather than stuffing them into our already overcrowded prisons. Neuman had no Republican opposition when he ran for re- election in 2012, but he does this time in the form of North Strabane Township Supervisor Sonia Stopperich. Her campaign got off to a stumbling start earlier this year when her boyfriend, Greg Sulc, the now-departed North Strabane parks and recreation director, apparently used a township phone and computer for campaign business, but she is a better candidate than this clumsy launch would indicate. Stopperich has a solid grasp of the issues and says that, as a nurse, she would bring a new perspective totheGeneral Assembly. Maybe someday. The 48th Legislative District includes the city of Washington, the boroughs of East Washington, CanonsburgandHouston, andChartiers, North Franklin, North Strabane and SouthStrabanetownships. from observer reporter
