Brett Austin Bailey says I have to post eight things about myself you might not know. 1. I spent seventeen years on the radio and managed a small AM station when I was 22 years old. 2. My mother won $1 million in the Connecticut lottery. 3. My first car was a 1963 Chevy. The back bumper was held on by wire and the passenger side floor was so rusted you could watch the road through a hole in the floor. My brother called it the “Love Machine.” 4. Robert DeNiro and Jane Fonda made “Stanley and Iris” on the street where I grew up. The protests about Jane Fonda made national news. 5. Cartoons had “hosts” when I was a kid. When I was four, my dad arranged for “Mr. Goober” to come to my neighborhood. I was amazed that he was in color. Years later, I worked at a radio station with a couple of former cartoon hosts. I’ll never forget the day one of the voices of my childhood told a dirty joke. 5a. I wish I could remember the joke. 6. I sometimes read to my students using cartoon voices. 7. Matt Laurer interviewed my on the Today Show during the disputed presidential election in 2000. I later figured out that more people watched me on television for 2 minutes, 42 seconds than the sum total of the people who every heard me on the radio. 8. I became a teacher when I realized I had the potential to be more like my dad. He was the kindest, most gentle and decent person I’ve ever met.
