Brief History of Faro de Cabo (Cape Engaño) The lighthouse Faro de Cabo Engaño or the Cape Engaño lighthouse stands upon a hill in the northern end of the island, 92.75 m above sea level. Currently under restoration, the 116-year-old lighthouse dates back to the Spanish colonial period. Its construction began in 1887 but the lighthouse was only completed in 1892. It is made out of volcanic bricks with a fortress-like design. 78 people were said to have died during its contruction because of the harsh working conditions. The lighthouse served as a guide to Spanish and Chinese merchant seamen as well as fishermen in the area. From the top of the lighthouse, there is an excellent view of the island and the surrounding area, as far as the Babuyan Islands to the north. It is the northernmost Philippine lighthouse dating from the Spanish period and the only working lighthouse in the northeastern coast of the Philippines.
