Britain might as well formalise its deep class divisions it into a caste system. That would at least be honest and not mislead the millions of normal, non-middle class children into thinking that they too can aspire to becoming a lawyer, army officer, politician, sportsman, journalist, academic, doctor or virtually any prestigious profession. There are obviously exceptions, but they are remarkably few. Having observed this country from the inside for eight of the last eleven years I can only attest to this reports findings. Compared to my native Norway, Britain is a remarkably unfair society in that an individuals life is largely dictated by its birth. It is even more remarkable to witness that these blatant injustices are becoming more entrenched and not less. Perceived in the light of Thomas Pikettys conclusions it is also difficult to see how this trend not will worsen. Apart from the moral and democratic aspects of the question, this oligarchic social model is also bad for economic growth in that only a minority of Britains latent intellectual potential is realised, thus reducing the countrys economic performance and competitiveness. Clearly, as a first step toward achieving any sort of equality of opportunity then private schools should be abolished and minimum wages drastically increased.
