Brochs At one time it was assumed that brochs were in some way robustly Pictish. Now that such assumptions have been challenged by a generation or two of archaeologists and historians a new view is emerging. The broch-building culture is concentrated in the very north-east of this island, and Orkneys and Shetlands. There are quite a number of outliers. The distribution does not correspond to historical Pictland and they seem to have largely fallen out of use by the period of the powerful Pictish kingdoms of the 7th century.
