Two days ago we received a call from an Animal Shelter in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. They had a female brought in by animal control. She had a micro-chip that was traced back to SSRR. Unfortunately, they had picked up our Toni. Toni’s owner had contacted us recently saying she wanted to surrender her back to SSRR; however, she offered to foster her until a new home was found. Toni was picked up near a busy Interstate, with no tags, and in poor condition. Her owner/foster had not reported her missing, nor had she even looked for her. When contacted, she stated that Toni had been missing a couple of days and that she “gets out a lot.” As soon as we were contacted by the shelter, we frantically started trying to get her out and to a veterinarian. Thankfully, one of our incredible volunteers, Jim Mann, responded immediately and was at the shelter in less than an hour to rescue Toni and transport her to the vet. Toni is underweight and has several issues needing medical care, one of the worst being covered in mange. There are places she has scratched until they bleed. Despite all of this, our transporter told us that Toni was as sweet as could be, wagging her tail and asking to be petted. She would lay her head in his lap or push up against him, wanting his attention and affection. However, her skin is so bad that when he touched her she winced and retreated in pain, but would quickly come back still begging to be petted. He said she is one of the sweetest dogs he has ever been around. Toni is now at the vet getting the care she needs. Due to her condition, she will likely have to stay there about a week. When released, she will need a foster who is willing to help her and nurse her back to health. She needs a foster family that will love her and treat her as part of their family, one that will never neglect her or put her in harm’s way again. Fortunately, we have some incredibly great fosters who take very good care of our dogs, especially ones with special needs. Toni desperately needs one of you now. Toni is a 3 year old female Rottweiler. She’s extremely friendly and loves everyone, including children. Shes good with other male dogs her size (not sure about females) and loves to play. Toni does not have experience being around cats. She walks great on a leash and is house trained as well as crate trained. Toni is an extremely loyal, sweet and loveable dog who just likes to be spoiled and feel like she’s part of the family! If you have not fostered before, but you have adopted from SSRR, you are already approved to foster. If you know of someone outside of SSRR who wants to foster, please tell them to complete the Foster Application at our website and we will process it immediately. If Toni would fit in your home and lifestyle, where she can recuperate from her terrible ordeal, please contact me directly. I do ask that this not be responded to with a bunch of comments about the foster. Trust me, there’s nothing anyone can say that we haven’t already said, or thought of to say or do—infuriating, sad, disgusted, as well as other descriptive words we cannot print. We are dealing with that aspect of this, and I can assure everyone that we will proceed with every option available to us. The important thing now is that we help Toni. She urgently needs a home--either Foster or Forever. BIll Lawton, SSRR President
