Brooklyn to Manhattan commuter camaraderie in full effect made me smile this morning as the sight of the newly working escalator at Whitehall St. provoked spontaneous crowd clapping and even joyful hooting. Doesn’t make up for the feckin’ R train sitting at 59th for 10min last night wasting AC with the doors open only to slam them shut right in the faces of passengers from a very full N train unloading and trying to make the transfer home, but hey it only took like 18 months to actually fix one thing! Earlier this year an escalator was hoisted 100 stories to the top of the new building at the WTC site in a morning, but hey, this is the subway not the Mall of America (or Manhattan…) so if you can’t climb 5 flights first thing in the morning then no Whitehall St. for you! (They started work on the 3 flight escalator long before Hurricane Sandy so pretty sure that’s not been a huge factor in how long it took to fix something that may have needed an upgrade but was actually working serviceably when it was taken offline… 18 months ago).
