Brrrrrr! It is 8 degrees and the sky is clear and blue. Overnight the stars glittered in a cold clear sky, temperatures plummeted, and surface objects became colder than the air surrounding them. When the water vapor condensed and came in contact with those objects, millions of unique ice crystals were formed. The result –hoarfrost! The best place to find this ephemeral display is on exposed plants near unfrozen lakes, ponds and streams. It’s a wonderful thing to look for if you are out for a hike in the woods, prairie, or wetlands on a winter morning!
