Bryan Whitaker gave me the band, Van Halen. I first became aware - TopicsExpress

Bryan Whitaker gave me the band, Van Halen. I first became aware of Van Halen in 1980 while a freshman in High School. I saw a classmate; Jeff Repplinger wearing a Van Halen II concert tee shirt and the band logo really caught my eye. I thought to myself that that tee shirt looks freakin’ awesome! After that day I had to find out who Van Halen was. I soon bought the Van Halen II cassette and my mind was blown away! The guitar of Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth’s vocals and the powerful driving drums of Alex Van Halen sounded amazing. The backup vocals on the songs were the icing on the cake. I later learned that the bass player Michael Anthony was the man responsible of the awesome backing vocals. Those backing vocals were a HUGE part of the classic Van Halen sound. The first 4 Van Halen albums are my favorite. To me, those 4 albums are Van Halen at their best! Just basic raw guitar, a classic raw hard rock band! No keyboards, no synths…pure rock! My favorite song is “Unchained”. The intro riff, the pinch harmonics during Roth’s vocals, the awesome backing vocals during the chorus, (Thank You Michael Anthony!), and then the great guitar solo. There are so many things going on during Eddie’s playing, amazing! My second favorite song is “Everybody Wants Some”. The intro drums are just suck me in! Then Eddie comes in with that killer guitar tone. Roth’s cheesy Tarzan yell and monkey noises at the beginning just add to the flavor of the song. Great stuff. Unfortunately, I’ve never seen Van Halen live. Thank goodness for DVD’s and Youtube. Thanks, Bryan, now I’m gonna have to listen to some Van Halen! Like my status if you want a band. Just name your first two favorite songs, if you’ve seen them live, and anything else you can offer of interest.
