Buckets of Baghdad Taking a shower in the heat of Baghdad can be a gruelling experience. With average temperatures in mid 40s, and the water tanks and pipes sizzling what one gets is a very hot stream of water which surely has some very unpleasant effects on one’s body and mind. No matter for how long you leave the tap running, the hot water never ends! After having been fed up with this ordeal, I decided to improvise, or shall I say to go back to the basics, and asked a colleague to buy me a plastic bucket which I can fill, leave it for couple of hours for the water temperature to cool a bit and later have a somewhat decent bath. The colleague was more than happy to help me out with this problem and yesterday he turned up in my office carrying a large orange colour bucket with a lid and small pot to scoop water. I examined the bucket and explained him that this won’t do since instead of a handle in the middle, it had two small handles on the sides meaning one will have to use both hands to carry this large sized bucket, and not being from the family of wrestlers, body builders or Tarzan, it would have not been possible for me to lift it once filled. In expressing this logic some rules related to physics, geometry and gravity were also explained, hence the bucket number one though it did have my favourite colour was rejected. Today arrived the bucket number 2, with a bluish-grey colour it looked more like small tub which is used for washing clothes or kitchen utensils, again it had two small handles on the side, therefore I had to repeat my physics, geometry and gravity lesson, this bucket/tub 2 came with a plastic jug to scoop water, all in all again what I was presented was not what I wanted. I explained the logic of having a handle in the middle and at that point I realised that my colleague either hadn’t seen a real bucket in life or was not able to find one in a shop. A quick search on internet was conducted and we had pictures of dozens of buckets on the screen, on seeing them he goes “aaa, I use this type to wash my car”, and I replied “brother, exactly, now better get me one of those”. In the meantime hot showers have continued unpleasantly, and I await patiently the arrival of bucket number 3 :)
