Burry Port RNLI rescue 3 people and a cat after vessel strikes rocks. 3 people and their pet cat were rescued this evening by the volunteer crew at Burry Port RNLI after their vessel encountered engine difficulty and struck rocks on the east side of the Burry Port pier. RNLI volunteers from Burry Port were called to service at 4.30pm on 18 October to assist a vessel that had found itself in difficulty. The vessel had suffered a loss of engine power and in rough conditions that saw the vessel in two metre swells and force 5-6 winds, the vessel struck rocks near Burry Port Lighthouse injuring a person on board. Swansea Coastguard were contacted following the incident and the launch of the Burry Port RNLI lifeboat was requested. Volunteer crew members who had not long finished work were quickly in the water on the stations D-Class lifeboat Diane Hilary ready to assist the vessel as it was being pounded against the rocks in the rough conditions. Once on scene a tow was rigged in order to safely bring the casualty vessel off the rocks. The three casualties who had been on board the vessel had safely managed to get off their vessel along with their cat and were stood on the rocks. One casualty shouted to an RNLI crew member for an ambulance as one of the persons on board had suffered head injuries. Swansea Coastguard were contacted and an air ambulance was sent to Burry Port along with Burry Ports Coastguard Team while volunteer crew member Rob Davies assessed the casualtys injuries and assisted with their care. As Burry Port Coastguard took over the care of the injured person, RNLI crew members recovered the vessel back to the safety of Burry Port Marina. The D-Class lifeboat was crewed by Darren Shepherd, Rob Davies and Paul Mitchell. Rob Davies said The conditions were tricky out there, the swells were big which made it rough for the casualty vessel. We worked well as a team and it ensured that the vessel was recovered safely, and the people and their cat were transferred into safe hands and out of danger. Thanks to the other rescue services that assisted in the events this evening - Burry Port Coastguard, Helimed Air Ambulance, Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service.
