Bus crash (MD) - 11 students, 3 drivers taken to hospital for evaluation, minor injuries FNP -- Eleven children and three drivers were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital after a Walkersville Elementary School bus and two vehicles wrecked at the intersection of Md. 194 and Stauffer Road around 8:30 a.m. Friday, officials said. The intersection was closed for about an hour while emergency responders cleaned up the scene. The drivers of two vehicles, a Mini Cooper and a Pontiac Sunfire, were taken to FMH, along with the school bus driver. Twenty-six children were on the bus, according to a news release issued by Capt. Tim Clarke of the Frederick County Sheriffs Office. The Pontiac had front end damage and the Minis rear and drivers side door were crushed. A left rear axle on the school bus was also damaged. The preliminary crash investigation showed that the bus was traveling north on Woodsboro Pike when it was struck in front of the rear drivers side wheel by an eastbound vehicle on Stauffer Road. The back of the bus swerved into southbound lanes of Woodsboro Pike and struck a third vehicle, Clarke stated. Some of the children were loaded onto another bus driven by Debra Boyd, who sat idling in the parking lot of a Sheetz gas station located at the intersection. She said the kids were “scared.” One child was released to a parent and 15 were taken to school, Clarke stated. An employee inside a Sheetz gas station said he heard a loud bang but did not see the accident. “They looked like they were more shaken up than anything,” Frederick County Public Schools spokesman Michael Doerrer said. No charges had been filed in the wreck, Clarke stated. The wreck was the second involving a FCPS bus in the same intersection Friday, Clarke stated. No injuries were reported in that wreck.
