"By Richard Frederick (Castries Central MP) When I disclosed what Allen Chastanet’s father had said to me about him, that he spends money like a little child that has never seen toys, there was upheaval; so I went quiet. However, there was no upheavel when Lorne Theophilus said Chastanet’s phone bills for the five years he was in office surpassed seven hundred thousand dollars—all of it paid by taxpayers. Theophilus further disclosed that for just one month alone Chastanet’s phone bill totaled forty-eight thousand dollars. More than mine over five years. So the father knew what he was saying about his son. We have seen the disappearance of several small shops in various communities, and medium supermarkets. We have seen the disappearance of Elwin’s Supermarket, Lera’s, Lafayette, J.Q, Wintrades and the emergence of J’s that enjoy a monopoly. GL Foods came along to offer us diversity and probably better prices, but even that giant was gobbled by “J’s” that determine what we eat and the prices. I have heard a nonsensical talk about Labour being afraid of Allen Chastanet and lobbying for Stephenson King. I dismiss this. Why would the Labour Party be afraid of a man who for five years as the minister of tourism ran an election in a tourism-based constituency; had his personal resources; had the resources of the Town Council; had the resources of the Tourist Board; had the resources of the Taiwanese Government; had the resources of the Government of Saint Lucia—yet could not beat Harold Dalson?"
